Profoundly Rewarding

Working as a camp counselor at the Morehead Planetarium this summer was undeniably one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve had. Initially, I was apprehensive about the role, unsure of my ability to effectively engage with children despite my passion for astronomy. The first few weeks were challenging as I navigated the nuances of teaching young minds with minimal prior training. However, in retrospect, it was an incredible journey.

Being part of a science camp where all the kids shared a keen interest in STEM subjects was invigorating. Sharing my passion for astronomy with them was immensely rewarding, and witnessing their enthusiasm mirrored my own experiences as a child. I cherished the opportunity to create an inclusive environment centered around the wonders of the cosmos, echoing the positive impact my own camp counselors had on me years ago.

Through this role, I gained invaluable educational insights, honing my teaching methods through trial and error. This not only enhanced my ability to communicate effectively but also allowed me to forge deeper connections with my peers. Building relationships within the Morehead community, alongside fellow counselors and the local children and their families, was a highlight of the experience.

However, the most memorable aspect was experiencing the camp alongside the campers themselves. Sharing their first-time awe at the Morehead Planetarium shows reignited my own passion for space, fostering stronger bonds with each child. Moreover, the role taught me patience—a skill I continually strive to improve—while also honing my conflict resolution abilities. I learned to navigate conflicts not only among campers but also between myself and both campers and colleagues.

In summary, my time as a camp counselor at the Morehead Planetarium was profoundly rewarding. It allowed me to merge my love for astronomy with the joy of nurturing young minds, leaving a lasting impact on both the children and me.
